First 4 Wheel Trip: desert

Hi, I am going to do my first desert 4W backcountry trip in mid-May--Mojave Preserve is a likely location--using stock 1998 Subaru Outback. This vehicle has decent traction, but not a lot of ground clearance, and no armoring of any type. I don't want to destroy it on very bad roads!
Just looking to enjoy being in the desert backcountry and finding some good campsites. I have no experience and do not expect to do any serious offroading, but I do want to "get away from it all" and do not want to be on main 4WD roads where I'd see a lot of other vehicles.
Any help on this location, or Mojave Desert alternatives, specific trails (maps), trail conditions and weather advice (for Mid-May) is appreciated, thanks!

Hope you enjoy your first trip. My first 4 wheel drive was a Subru Brat. They do have their limitations and as long as you don't exceed those, you should be ok. I would suggest taking 2 full size spare tires, will not find that size on the trial. Plenty of water just in case.

Thanks very much Terry..Any advice on a route. That is my main question right now..Where can I access this kind of info? Is there a book? Do you or other club members have personal experience?

Many thanks....Jane
