Update to the membership

I hope everyone is doing well and if you were not able to make it to Molina or Hi Desert Round-Up, you missed a great time. Both committees did a great job setting them up on short time frames and together they both provided a great experience. Cal4Wheel is winding back up fast with our events in motion and Sierra Trek being just around the corner we hope to see you having some fun at the next one.

I would like to pass on some great news pertaining to some of the concerns the membership has had with Cal4Wheel and the Oceano Dunes issues, the canceling of our state lobbyist and the open natural resource consultant positions, along with some other quick topics.

  1. The board of directors met in person in Sacramento June 5 and 6, and we had the entire meeting broadcast via Zoom for our membership to participate. I want to thanks those who logged in.
  2. The board had been working on our next year's financials and they came up with a balanced budget for 2021/2022 that was passed on Sunday. Things are looking a lot better than it did toward the end of last year with almost all the events being restricted or canceled. Due to the actions of the board and the temporary spending reductions, along with the huge efforts of the volunteers and the raffle vehicle making a record income and now with the state starting to open back up and our events picking up, it is looking more financially stable than it did during our November BOD meeting.
  3. The board of directors agreed to financially support and partner with Eco-Logic and the final process for that should be within a week. The payment was made in a motion to make a onetime payment, and to follow up with 12 monthly payments. Knowing this will be a lengthy legal issue, the board will review the issues and reevaluate the status in one year.
  4. I worked with the Coalition for Public Access and an agreement was made and Cal4Wheel will be reinstating the arrangement with the coalition and Terry McHale with Aaron Read and Associates as our state lobbyist. He will be there to fight for issues on the State Floor pertaining to things that our members have concerns with.
  5. The board also approved the contracts for our webmaster and In Gear editor. This is a huge part of how we communicate with our membership. I personally can’t thank Suzy Johnson enough for all the hard work and dedication she puts in for Cal4Wheel and the members.
  6. The board is still seeking applications for natural resource consultants and they presented some new ideas on posting the RFP. They are also working on alternatives for each district, such as environmental affairs position from local clubs and possibly reaching out to the district colleges to enlist students willing to be trained. I see a huge benefit to all of this. If you know of anyone interested or have some ideas, please reach out to myself or any of your board members.

There were a lot of other topics on the table that were resolved, such as, we have a new State Merchandise Chair, Shawn Bell from the South District. He will be working with the North and Central District merchandise volunteers. He will be getting the online store up and running soon. We are still looking for someone in the South District to assist with merchandise. If you are interested, please reach out to Shawn or me and we will explain what is expected and would truly appreciate the help.

We have a great raffle vehicle team in place for the committee this year, led by Chris Silveira. They will be working with Metal Cloak, who is the builder this year. I cannot wait to see this rig when completed. The efforts this year will probably exceed what was done last year. If you get a chance and you see Matson and the team at Metal Cloak, say hi and tell them thanks for supporting the association. If you have a Jeep, check out their products. They will make your rig better, as they did with our TJ.

Last two items for now. Check out our web page for a link to the BFGoodrich On Trail app (Introducing BFGoodrich On Trail). They are offering a discount to those who purchase the app through the link. This is an easy-to-use map app with many features. Cal4Wheel has also partnered with on a membership drive. They are offering the first 100 people who sign up for a Cal4Wheel membership a free T-shirt and some other items.

My hats off to all the members on the board working on making the association better for all and to all the volunteers that are putting in their time at events and other functions to make the members enjoy and appreciate what Cal4Wheel has to offer. We will continue to grow stronger as a team and as an organization, we will stay the fight to keep our public lands open!

Stay safe!
